Elementary students enjoy Heritage Day at Old Fort

The Old Fort hosted Heritage Day for local elementary students on Friday, Sept. 30, offering interactive learning about local history.
Volunteers, teachers and the River and Plains Society banded together to offer an opportunity for Fort Benton Elementary School students to learn about life in Fort Benton during the 19th Century.
Greg Smith, a renowned historical presenter, performed “A Visit with an 1879 American Fur Company Trader” for the 4th- 6th graders.
Dave Parchen and Larry Cook of the River and Plains Society taught the history of the trading post within the Old Fort, as well as the importance of trading between the settlers and the Native Americans.
The students then visited a bead exhibit and received beaded bracelets and necklaces, provided by donations from the River and Plains Society and the GFWC Fort Benton Woman’s Club.
“I’ve been told the children still wear their bracelets and necklaces around school. Glad to know that this Heritage Day still has their interests piqued,” said retired teacher and River and Plains volunteer Renee McDonald, who coordinated the event.
The students also experienced Native American games and crafts that encouraged skill building and a deeper understanding of the different cultures that lived here.
Heritage Day is usually held during the middle of September, but with scheduling
issues of another presenter and Homecoming week, the committee moved Heritage Day to the last day in September.
The timing worked out well, coinciding with the state’s recognition of American Indian Heritage Day on Sept. 23 and 30 this year.
The committee plans to hold next year’s Heritage Day at the Homestead Village behind the Ag Museum with new presentations, games, crafts, and activities related to the homestead lifestyle and era.
This year, Carter School’s five students joined the Fort Benton students for Heritage Day. Next year, the committee hopes more Chouteau County schools can participate and learn about the history of their state, hometown and ancestors.
